Cultural Crossroads: Print and Reading in Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century English-Speaking Montreal
|
Abstract |
Contrary to the title, this article offers little information on the reading habits of English Montrealers in the eighteenth century, and nothing at all on the nineteenth century. There is also no information on English-language printers in the city during the period under review. The author outlines the history and publications of the French-born printer Fleury Mesplet (1734-1794), who arrived in Montreal in 1775 via the United States at the behest of Benjamin Franklin and the U.S. Continental Congress. In 1785 Mesplet began publication of the Montreal Gazette/Gazette de Montréal, a newspaper that copied articles in their original language from English and French newspapers.
