Title |
'High above them all': Raum und Gesellschaftsordnung in Montreal, 1880-1930
|
Abstract |
An examination of the social forces in Montreal between 1870 and 1930 which developed Mount Royal from a geographic feature located outside the town to the mountain becoming enveloped by the city's urban growth, and a park and cross being established on the summit. The author focuses on the role Mount Royal played in the negotiation of power between Montreal's Anglo-Protestant elite and Franco-Catholic elite, and on the story of the cross erected on top of the mountain in 1924 and how the competing elites tried to appropriate Mount Royal as a means of fulfilling their respective visions of the city and its society.
