The Recognition of English-Speaking Communities in Quebec’s Commemoration and Heritage Practices
|
Abstract |
The author explores tne Quebec Government's commemoration strategy, "Je me souviens," and its online cultural heritage database — asking whether they adequately reflect the province's English-speaking communities. Her takeways from her analysis are: roughly 27.5% of funded commemorative projects between 2022 and 2025 were related, in whole or in part, to English-speaking Quebec, suggesting good overall representation; government advisory bodies guiding commemoration appear to lack direct representation from English-speaking Quebec; and gaps in heritage databases and search tools make it hard to identify English-speaking contributions to Quebec’s history.
