Title
Nurseryman & Man of Culture : A Sketch of Robert Cleghorn of Montreal
Abstract
The Scottish-born Robert Cleghorn (1778-1841) opened Montreal's first plant nursery, Blinkbonny Gardens, in the early 1800s on the south side of Sherbrooke Street (then known as St. Mary Street), just west of today's Bleury. He ran the nursery for thirty years. Cleghorn was also the Secretary of the Montreal Floral Society (renamed the Montreal Horticultural Society in 1818) in 1812 and again in 1829. He was also active in the Natural History Society of Montreal, founded in 1827, and the Montreal Mechanic's Institute. In his later years, Cleghorn concerted his nursery grounds into a garden promenade.
