Title
Le Club des raquetteurs de Montréal / The Montreal Snowshoe Club
Abstract
The Montreal Snowshoe Club was created in 1840 by English-speaking Montrealers. Its members met regularly to take part in a 20-kilometer torch-lit race on the slopes of Mount Royal. Newspaper accounts reported these hikes started or ended with a supper of several services. According to the author, the club members sang in unison under the influence of alcohol and then embarked on a race which sometimes lasted several hours. In 1912, a group of Francophone Montrealers organized L'Union des clubs de raaquisseurs de Montréal / The Montreal Snowshoe Clubs Union "de populariser et promouvoir notre beau sport national de la saison d’hiver, LA RAQUETTE, dans la Cité de Montréal."
