Abstract |
The British-born Jane Harris Putnam, née Van Gelder, (1908-2000) immigrated from Europe to Montreal at the outbreak of the Second World War, and from the mid-1940s to 1960 established a series of fashion salons (Jane Harris Salon) on Sherbrooke Street, always in the vicinity of the Ritz Carleton Hotel. The author outlines the influence of Jane Harris haute couture on Montreal's fashion industry and women's clothing styles, as well as Jane Harris Putnam's work with European evacuees and refugees during and following the war.
