Abstract |
A study of the decline in Montreal in the rate of home ownership (31.6 percent to 14.7 percent) during the city's transformation from a pre-industrial to an industrial city. The authors' data is based on Montreal's tax assessment rolls during the second half of the nineteenth century. By 1881, they note, English-speaking Montrealers tended to be tenants rather than owners. Only in well-to-do areas of the city were English Montrealers home owners. French-speaking Montrealers, by 1881 the majority of home owners, were concentrated overwhelmingly in low-rent streets.
