Abstract |
A study of one of Quebec's first trade unions. The Quebec Ship Labourers' Benevolent Society was founded in 1857 as a mutual aid organization by Irish longshoremen at the Port of Quebec. The author details the working conditions at the port, as well as the relationship between the "established" (pre-famine) Irish of Quebec City and those who came in the 1840s and 1850s as a result of the famine and hardships in Ireland.
