Culture in Motion: Yiddish in Canadian Jewish Life
Abstract
The twentieth century saw the transformation of Yiddish in Canada from an immigrant vernacular to a language of high culture, to a heritage language and component of Jewish popular culture. As the primary destination for 125,000 Jews that settled in Canada between 1905 and 1920, Montreal served as Canada's Yiddish centre. Yiddish during this period was the city's third language after French and English. Today, Hasidim increasingly comprise the world Yiddish speakers. The Montreal region has the second largest population of Hasidim in North America, after New York.
