Abstract |
The Montreal Diet Dispensary was founded in 1879 by a volunteer group of women who prepared and distributed nutritious meals (broth, meat jelly, wine jelly and bread pudding) to many destitute and ill Montrealers referred by a doctor. Emily F. De Witt headed up the volunteer group. In 1922 she was succeeded by Jean Crawford, a dietitian who initiated a nutrition counselling program. In 1924, Ann (Nan) O. Garvock was hired as the Dispensary's dietitian, a position she held until 1958. Agnes C. Higgins began working as a dietitian at the Dispensary in 1948 and served as Executive Director from 1959 to 1981. Under her direction, the Dispensary began it focus on nutritional and social support to pregnant women. Marie-Paule Duquette was hired as a dietitian in 1969 and became Executive Director in 1981, a position she held until 2013. Jackie Demers is the current Executive Director.
