Toward a Real Commitment to the Vitality of Official Language Minority Communities
|
Abstract |
An examination of two Official Languages Minority Communities - Anglophones in Quebec and Francophones in Nova Scotia. According to the document: "The survival of the English language in Quebec is not threatened. Anglophones are not fighting against language transfers (assimilation); they are fighting to retain control of their community institutions and to be adequately represented in public institutions in order to ensure they have access to English-language services. That is the fundamental issue, the main aspiration of Quebec’s anglophone communities." The one Quebec institution that the document examines is the language rights available to Anglophones at the Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins (BMP) Hospital in the Eastern Townships town of Cowansville.
