Abstract |
In 1843, the Montreal-born William Edmond Logan (1798-1875) was hired to undertake a geological survey of the Canadas (Canada East and Canada West). The Geological Survey of Canada (GSC), based in Montreal from 1843 until 1881, evolved from this position. Logan served as the director of the GSC until 1869. Alfred R.C. Selwyn (1824-1902) succeeded Logan as Director of the GSC, having served as director of the geological survey of the Australian colony of Victoria for seventeen years. He served as Director of the GSC until 1894. The Nova Scotia-born Henry Y.L. Brown (1843-1928) worked under Selwyn on the geological survey of Victoria and later joined Selwyn in Canada, but found the climate too severe. He returned to Australia to become the government geologist of South Australia.
