Abstract |
The American-born Jacob De Witt (1785-1859) immigrated to Montreal around 1802. He became a whealthy businessman (hardware, lumber, railroad, and real estate), banker (Bank of Canada, City Bank of Montreal, Banque du Peuple), politician (a reformer) and justice of the peace. He was one of the founders of the American Presbyterian Church in Montreal in the early 1820s. .
