Un espace et un lieu de culture : le Art Building de Sherbrooke, 1887-1927
|
Abstract |
The author examines the creation of two cultural institutions in Sherbrooke in the second half of the nineteenth century devoted to literature, fine arts and music. The two organizations were the Sherbrooke Library and Art Union, founded in 1880, and the Sherbrooke Library and Art Association, incorporated in 1886, which built the Art Building in 1887. Both of these organizations were mainly composed of the city's Anglo elite. The Montreal architect James Nelson (1830-1919) designed the Sherbrooke Art Building on Dufferin Street. It remained a public library and cultural center until 1927.
