Title
Snowdon : Remembering the Streetcar
Abstract
Includes a short history of Montreal's Snowdon district, in the west-central part of the city. The author explains that Snowdon district was named after James Snowdon (1791-1864), a Scottish-born immigrant who came to Canada in 1819 and, in 1824, purchased sixty acres from the Hurtubise family on what was then the agricultural outskirts of the city. In 1887, one of Snowdon's son donated part of the family land to the Montreal Park and Island Railway so that the company could develop a streetcar line area. During this time, the remainder of the Snowdon farm was subdivided into residental and commercial lots. In 1967, the Decarie Expressway split the Snowdon district down the middle, forever changing the area.
