Title
The Gavazzi Riot: Sectarian Violence on the Haymarket, 1853
Abstract
Alessandro Gavazzi, an anti-Catholic Italian excommunicated Barnabite monk, was invited to Montreal on June 9, 1853, by Protestant Orangemen to speak at the Zion Congregational Church on Beaver Hall Hill. Montreal's Irish Catholic population gathered outside the church to protest his presence, and a riot eventually broke out. British troops opened fire on the rioters and about a dozen people were killed and another forty or so were wounded. Most of those killed or wounded by the soldiers were Protestants.
