A Profile of Teachers on Availability in the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal

Abstract |
Dropping enrollment in English language Quebec schools in the 1980s forced some teachers to be "on surplus" or, in the language of their contracts, "on availability". The author examines the impact during this period on the teachers employed by the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal (PSBGM), the largest English-speaking school board in Quebec. He found that teachers "on availability" at the PSBGM were well qualified, experienced people, most of whom were female, in the prime of their teaching careers.
