Abstract |
The Scottish-born Alexander Spark (1762-1819) first came to Quebec as a teacher in 1780, but returned to Scotland in 1783 to study for the ministry and receive ordination. He returned the following year, became the assistant to the ageing Presbyterian minister, George Henry, and formally replaced Henry in 1795. Spark was instrumental in establishing St. Andrew's Church in Quebec City in 1810. Spark was a moderate in an era when there was a split between moderates and evangelicals within the Presbyterian Church, including in Quebec City.
