Title
Proceedings Relating to the Expulsion of Ezekiel Hart from the House of Assembly of Lower Canada
Abstract
Ezekiel Hart's (1770-1843) victory in the 1807 by-election in Trois-Rivières precipitated a political controversy when he was expelled the following year from the House of Assembly because, as a Jew, it was argued that he could not genuinely take the oath of office on a Christian Bible. The author copies the discussion of this event that appeared in the Journals of the House of Assembly of Lower Canada for the Years 1808 and 1809.
