Abstract
On July 8, 1852, a fire swept through Montreal, burning a fifth of the city and leaving 12,000 people homeless. Two days after the fire, a committee was struck under the leadership of Benjamin Holmes, an businessman associated with the Bank of Montreal, to organize the rebuilding of the devastated part of the city. Using notarial records of the era, the authors describe on a micro-economic basis how the reconstruction was undertaken within the context of the transformation of Montreal from a commercial center to an industrial hub.
