Abstract |
The nineteenth-century American-based union movement known as the Order of the Knights of Labor began an intense drive in the 1880s to establish itself in Montreal. The author points out that its greatest success was among English-speaking workers of Irish descent. The author argues that the Irish played a primordial role in the sustainable rooting of the Order at the heart of the Quebec economy, as well as played a beneficial involvement as intermediaries between Quebec Catholic ecclesiastical authorities and the Order.
