Title
Redpath's Many Mansions
Abstract
An examination of the contributions of the Redpath family to the urban development of downtown Montreal. This development began in the 1840s when the Scottish-born John Redpath (1796-1869) converted his 235-acre estate on the side of Mount Royal, known as Terrace Bank, into villa lots (on the higher ground above Sherbrooke Street) and a "New Town" of terraced townhouses on the plateau (what is now downtown Montreal). The author outlines how succeeding Redpath generations built and lived in various estate houses and townhouse within this core area until the turn of the twentieth century.
