Langues sans frontière : le bilinguisme chez les jeunes à Stanstead dans les Cantons de l'Est
|
Abstract |
An examination of code-switching (mixing French and English) among bilingual youth in the Eastern Townships community of Stanstead. The author found that contrary to the negative attitudes to code switching found in the literature, the youth of Stanstead perceive the mixing of languages in a positive light. The same attitude holds for bilingualism, of which they seem to be very proud. The author concludes that the main points that came out of her research is that the young people of Stanstead consider code-switching to be their own language variety and that their linguistic identity is
based not on English or French, but mainly on the mixing of the two.
