Title
Suppressing Rebellion in Lower Canada: British Military Policy and Practice, 1837-1838
Abstract
Home burning was one of the punitive measures used by the British Army against rebel leaders to suppress rebellion in Lower Canada in 1837 and 1838. However, the author points out that such measures as floggings and "half-hangings", used against Irish rebels in Ireland's 1798 uprising, were not used in Lower Canada by the British. In 1849, the government, under the Rebellion Losses Act, compensated those rebels whose property was damaged.
