Abstract
Includes a demographic examination of official languages spoken in Quebec between 1996 and 2006. According to the author, the mother-tongue English-speaking population dropped from 8.3 percent of the overall provincial population in 1996 to 7.7 percent in 2006. French mother-tongue speakers in the province during this same period dropped from 80.9 percent to 79 percent. Within the greater Montreal area (RMR de Montréal), English-speakers dropped from 12.9 to 11.9 percent of the overall population between 1996 and 2006. French speakers during this period in this area dropped from 67.2 to 64.9 percent of the overall population. On the island of Montreal, English speakers dropped from 18 to 16.2 percent of the overall population during this period, while French speakers dropped from 52.3 to 48.8 percent of the overall population.
