Abstract |
The author presents a comparison of the mobility structures of Francophone and Anglophones in Quebec from the 1950s to the 1970s. He argues that changes in occupational structure occurred because higher education was more accessible than before, and economic growth provided opportunities for social mobility. Differences in occupational attainment between Francophones and Anglophones increased from one generation to the next. More variation in the educational and occupational attainment of Francophones is explained by socioeconomic background variables compared to the case of Anglophones, indicating a somewhat less open or meritocratic opportunity structure for Francophones.
