Abstract |
Montreal's Victoria Bridge, the first bridge to span the St. Lawrence River, was officially opened by the Prince of Wales in August 1860. The site for the bridge was selected by Montreal engineer Thomas Keefer. The structure was designed by Robert Stephenson and Alexander McKenzie Ross. The chief engineer was James Hodges. The contractors were the British partnership of Peto, Brassey and Betts. The labourers were mostly Irish immigrants.
