|
Abstract |
Dividing the Quebec population into French, British and Others, the author comments on the percentage decline of the French population in the province between 1951 and 1971 (82 percent to 79 percent), the decline of the English-speaking population (12.1 percent to 10.6 percent), and the increase of Allophones (5.9 percent to 10.4 percent). During the same period, the percentage distribution of the population according to mother-tongue showed that French mother-tongue speakers declined from 82.5 percent to 80.7 percent; English mother-tongue speakers declined from 13.8 percent to 13.1 percent; and Other mother-tongue speakers rose from 3.7 percent to 6.2 percent.
