Donald Morrison's Defence Fund : Friends, Relatives and Strangers Came to Fugitive's Aid
|
Abstract |
The author points out that Donald Morrison (1858-1894), the son of Scottish immigrants and better known as the "Megantic Outlaw," is one of the truly legendary figures of the Eastern Townships. The loss of the Morrison family farm in the Eastern Townships in the late 1880s triggered a series of events that culminated in Morrison killing Deputy Jack Warren, and his being harboured from the police for ten months by the local Scottish community in Megantic. Morrison was eventually caught and convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 18 years hard labour. The author recounts how sympathic Scots both within Megantic and beyond formed a committee and raised funds for the defence of Donald Morrison.
