Abstract
George Harold Baker (1877-1916) had been the Conservative Member of Parliament for Brome County and a Lieutenant Colonel in the 5th Battalion Canadian Mounted Rifles, a unit comprised of volunteers from the Eastern Townships, when he died at the Battle of Ypres. Born in Sweetsburg, now part of Cowansville, Quebec, he was the son of the Hon. George Barnard Baker, K.C. (a member of the Quebec National Assembly before being elected to Parliament for Missisquoi County, and then being called to the Senate), and Jane Percival Cowan Baker. Baker was the only sitting Member of Parliament to have died fighting in the First World War. This memorial book recounts Baker's army life with "The Fighting Fifth" following the outbreak of the First World War. He is buried at Poperinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium.
