Réception des messages électoraux et identité ethnique : le cas de la communauté libanaise de Montréal

Abstract |
The author set out to determine whether peripheral cues to the message could influence immigrants' political choices by examining if identification with a candidate sharing the same ethnicity as voters could have an influence on a voter's behavior. Based on interviews with eighteen Lebanese Montrealers, she found that partisanship is a better indicator of voter's behavior. Thus, presenting a candidate sharing the same ethnicity as the voter does not appear to be an effective political strategy. The author also attempted to determine whether ethnic identification, related to the feeling of belonging to a minority group and to the desire to act according to the philosophy of that group, could explain choices made by participants in her study. She found that results show that there is no direct relationship between ethnic factors and a respondent's political behavior.
