Title
Montreal Synagogue Sisterhoods (1900-1949): A Female Community, Culture and Religious World
Abstract
Synagogue sisterhoods were formed and evolved in the twentieth century along with other women’s volunteer organizations. The author traces the formation and early development of the sisterhoods within the three oldest and most prominent synagogues in Montreal – one Orthodox (Shearith Israel), one Conservative (Shaar Hashomayim) and one Reform (Temple Emanu-El). The author examines the kinds and purposes of activities that were performed, the reason women joined sisterhoods, and the ways that sisterhoods differed from other Jewish women volunteer organizations. She also examines whether the early sisterhood organizations changed women’s power and position within the social structure of the synagogue and the larger Jewish community.
