Abstract
The Ontario-born William Hugh Coverdale (1871-1949) served as president of the Montreal-based Canada Steamship Lines from 1922 to 1949. Created in 1912 following a series of mergers, Canada Steamship Lines transported travelers on its white ships from the Great Lakes to the Saguenay. At that time, the company had two hotels, the Manoir Richelieu and the Hôtel Tadoussac, where passengers were accommodated. Following a fire in 1928, the Manoir Richelieu was rebuilt and Coverdale then began to collect Canadian iconography to adorn the walls of the new hotel. This collection brought together nearly 3,000 works. In 1941, he demolished the old Hôtel Tadoussac and erected a new one, which he decorated with antique furniture and objects testifying to the traditional culture of French Canada.
