| Abstract |
In February 1851, Shadrach Minkins, a fugitive slave from Virginia, was brought to trial in Boston preparatory to being returned to his slave owner. Through the combined efforts of Boston’s African-American community and abolitionists, he escaped and was sent north. Mr. Minkins eventually found a home in Montreal where he married, raised a family, and supported himself as both a shopkeeper and a barber until his death in the winter of 1875. He is buried in Section B2 of Montreal's Mount Royal Cemetery. A commemorative plaque was unveiled at his grave site by the Friends of Mount Royal Cemetery on October 17, 2023.
