Abstract |
On April 25, 1849, Montreal's Anglophone Tory commercial class stormed the Parliament building, which was then located in that city, in protest over the passage of the Rebellion Losses Bill. The protesters saw the bill as compensating those who participated in treasonous acts during the Rebellions of 1837 and 1838, as well as the hegemony of Francophones over Canada East's political process. During the riot, the Parliament building was burnt. This book contains reprints of articles about the fire and the events leading up to it, mostly denouncing the actions of the protesters.
