Abstract
On November 24, 1899, The Royal Trust Company opened for business on Place D'Armes in Montreal. On its initial Board of Directors were some of the city's most prominent businessmen: Sir William Van Horne, C.R. Hosmer, Thomas Shaughnessy, W.W. Ogilvie, William Macdonald, and Donald Smith (Lord Strathcona) as President. In 1901, the Royal Trust began its expansion beyond Montreal, opening an office in Toronto. On its 75th Anniversary in 1974, Royal Trust was the largest trust company in Canada and fifth in North America, with 130 offices across Canada, in the U.S. and Europe.
