Abstract |
A description of the changes which, over a century, transformed the small, predominantly French-speaking town of Montreal at the time of the Conquest into a major, predominantly English-speaking economic center that had expanded far beyond the original walls of the old town. The sanitary, safety and other problems which accompanied urban expansion and the recurrent failure of civic leaders to institute long-range solutions are documented by the authors.
