A Study of Moral Thinking of Students in a CEGEP Nursing Program
|
Abstract |
The author examined an Anglophone CEGEP nursing program and its preparation of nursing students for ethical practice (circa 1987). An examination of the curriculum, the faculty as well as the moral judgement of students was conducted by the author. She believed at the outset that nursing students would have a higher level of moral development than their non-nursing student peers. Differences were sought and none were found. Examination of the curriculum by the author revealed the use of traditional non-effective approaches to the teaching of ethics. Very little deliberate and planned educational intervention was directed at students’ moral development, and ethics content was allocated very little time across the entire program. A review of the faculty revealed a lack of teacher preparation for teaching of ethics and guidance of students’ moral development.
