Abstract |
An analysis of the matrimonial habits of Irish immigrants in Montreal following the Great Famine indicates an increase in minor-aged brides (under the age of 21 years) and an increase in the number of brides and grooms orphaned from at least one of their parents. Furthermore, the author found that there seems to have been a homogenization of the Montreal Irish community, based on statistics regarding endogamy of Irish province and county, which diminished from year to year. Only Irish from the province of Munster are an exception. Finally, the author concludes that there was a strong ethnic and religious endogamy during this period. Any notable ethnic exogamy is principally due to marriages with French Canadians.
