Abstract |
The Huntingdon County-born Hugh Graham (1848-1938), 1st Baron Atholstan, was the first Canadian journalist to be knighted. In 1869 he co-founded the Montreal newspaper, the Evening Star (later re-named the Montreal Daily Star and then the Montreal Star), and founded the rural-oriented Family Herald and the suburban-oriented Montreal Standard. He also gained controlled of the Montreal Herald. In 1925 Graham sold his publications to John W. McConnell. The author outlines the accounts of the many activities that made both Graham and his Montreal Star newspaper "sensational" during the latter half of the nineteenth century, including some 93 libel suits, of which he lost only three.
