The Role of the Parish in Fostering Irish-Catholic Identity in Nineteenth-Century Montreal
|
Abstract |
The author studies the efforts of Montreal's Irish community to maintain a cohesive community in the nineteenth century by fusing religious and national identification through the city's Irish Catholic parishes. She points out that the early community directed its attention towards institution building centered around St. Patrick's Church, built in the 1840s. Following the creation of smaller Irish Catholic churches beginning in the early 1870s, the author notes that greater emphasis was placed on the creation of a wide variety of parish societies.
