Le Québec, les Irlandais et la politique au début du XXe siècle
|
Abstract |
The author argues that by the early twentieth century, relations between Irish (English-speaking Catholic) Quebecers and French-speaking Quebecers had reconciled to the point that: (1) the fate of Ireland interested both Catholic groups; (2) the Irish in Quebec were still an influential community that had to be taken into account by Francophone politicians; and (3) that the tensions between Irish Quebecers and Francophone Quebecers in the nineteenth century had to a degree relaxed by the early twentieth century due to the similarities and constraints that touched Catholic Ireland and French Quebec within the British Empire. However, he concludes his essay by pointing out that "bitterness" between the two Catholic groups in Quebec still existed into the 1920s.
