Abstract |
An examination of the impacts of events in Poland in the 1980s on the parishioners of the four Roman Catholic Polish parishes in Montreal. During the late 1970s and 1980s, Poland witnessed events that changed its history: the election of Cardinal Wojtyła to the Papacy in 1978; the creation in 1980 of the first free trade union in Eastern Europe, Solidarity; the imposition of martial law in 1981; the assassination of Father Popiełuszko in 1984; and the fall of communism in 1989. The author describes the repercussions of these events on Montreal's Polish community, and how the parishioners, driven by a solidarity and a sense of duty to the homeland and the nation, mobilized by providing three types of help: spiritual (prayers, masses, homilies), material (consignments of medicines, food, money) and refugee sponsorship (language training, help with finding employment, etc.). The author argues that in the process of mobilization, the parishes played a very important role for the community. Guardians of Polish traditions, culture and language on Montreal soil, they stimulated a sense of belonging to the Polish nation. She claims that a sense of unity was realized between the Montreal community, the Polish world diaspora and Poland.
