Abstract
A cultural history of the sport of ice hockey during the modern game's first twenty years of popular celebrity between 1890 and 1910. The author examines newspaper accounts, court records and archival material from the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association, the Montreal Hockey Club and the Ontario Hockey Association to explore the context in which hockey violence developed and the criminal prosecutions were brought against violent hockey players.
