Books Used For Learning A Second Language Before Confederation
Abstract
An overview of the nature and origin of textbooks used to teach English and French as second languages in Lower Canada from 1800 to 1867. According to the author, there were more textbooks available during this period for anglophones wanting to learn French than there were for francophones wanting to learn English. The books for anglophones wanting to learn French were more practical than those for francophones wanting to learn English, with an emphasis on conversation rather than on grammatical theory.
