Lavy's Shul: A Canadian Experiment in Reconstructionism
|
Abstract |
The first synagogue to ever call itself "Reconstructionist" was established in Montreal in 1960. The founder and guiding figure of the Dorshei Emet (formerly the Reconstructionist Synagogue) was Lavy M. Becker (1905-2001), who functioned as the community's "honorary" (unpaid) rabbi in its first phase of development from 1960 to 1976. Reconstructionist Judaism espouses the ideal of Judaism as a progressively evolving civilization, a Judaism more expansive than what is usually defined as the religious domain.
