When the Irish Invaded Canada : The Incredible True Story of the Civil War Veterans Who Fought for Ireland's Freedom
|
Abstract |
An examination of the two invasions of Canada by Irish Americans, many Union and Confederate veterns of the U.S. Civil War, who sought to capture the British Canadian colonies and exchange them for the liberation of Ireland. Members of the Fenian Brotherhood, these Irish Americans attacked Canada twice, once in 1866 and again in 1870. In both invasions, a point of battle of the Fenian attacks was Missisquoi County in the Eastern Townships. In the 1866 invasion, the Fenians captured several small villages (among them, St. Armand, Pigeon Hill, Frelighsburg) and held them for three days before being driven back across the border by an armed force from Montreal. In 1870, the Fenians again attemped to cross into Missisquoi County, but were driven back by a local militia (known as the Red Sashes) following a battle at Eccles Hill (now a national historic site).
