Title
La protection et la transmission du patrimoine montréalais dans la deuxième moitié du XIXe siècle : l'exemple de la Numismatic and Antiquarian Society of Montreal
Abstract
The author examines the history, membership and heritage projects undertaken during the first thirty years (1862-1892) of the Numismatic and Antiquarian Society of Montreal (NASM). First, the author examines the NASM’s constitution, financing, and relations with other societies. Then, the author offers a socio-professional profile and participation of members of the NASM, focusing on four members chosen as examples (Louis-Adolphe Huguet-Latour, Gerald E. Hart, William D. Lighthall, and Alfred Sandham). Finally, the author explores the representations of history conveyed by the Society through the three memory-transmitting media that it produced: commemorative plaques, lectures, and articles in the Canadian Antiquarian and Numismatic Journal (CANJ). The author seeks to find out whether this society was in line with the trends of its time, or whether it innovated in its way of doing things, its composition, and the subjects with which it dealt. The author concludes that the NASM was situated halfway between the two poles: it respected the practices of its time, while showing signs of originality through its ethnolinguistic mix and the variety of historic themes with which it dealt.
