Abstract |
The author examines the integration of the Japanese Canadian community in Montreal between 1942 and 1988. Forced out of their homes in British Columbia by the federal government during the Second World War, the war-time population of ethnic Japanese in Quebec rose from forty-eight individuals in 1941 to 1,130 by 1951. Most of the Japanese who arrived in Quebec were second-generation Canadian Anglophone Protestants, although some were Catholic or Buddhist. The author examines the integration of this community into the predominately White, French-speaking Catholic province, and whether the associations and clubs (mainly political and cultural) and the three major religions within the community (Buddhist, Protestant and Catholic) helped or hindered the integration.
