Abstract |
The first public library in Sherbrooke opened in 1886. The founders of the library were the leading citizens of the city, who had organized themselves into the Sherbrooke Library and Art Association. Three of the members, comprising twenty percent of the group, were Francophones. The majority, eighty percent, were Anglophones. The Montreal architect James Nelson (1830-1919) designed the Sherbrooke Library and Art Building on Dufferin Street. It remained a public library and cultural center until 1927.
